CHARITY RAFFLES

CHARITY RAFFLES

This year’s chosen charity is Linkage Southwark. This enterprise will benefit from the proceeds generated through the Christmas Fair raffle and the purchase of Santa hats.

Link Age Southwark is a local charity which provides social activities to over 60s in Southwark. They arrange more than 20 social groups across the Borough ranging from singing to yoga to bridge – there’s something to suit everybody. The charity also recruits volunteers to visit over 60s at home for an hour a week for a cup of tea and a chat. Volunteers can also provide lifts to help over 60s attend Link Age Southwark groups and social activities.

Link Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity providing friendly volunteer support to over 500 isolated, older people in Southwark. It helps older people stay connected with their communities, alleviating loneliness, improving health and wellbeing and making communities stronger through volunteering.

Link Age Southwark is looking for new volunteers to support isolated older people in Southwark. The charity, which has been based in East Dulwich for 24 years, arranges social activities for older people at risk of loneliness – people who live alone without family, who may have been recently bereaved or have mobility issues which prevent them getting out and about.

The charity’s volunteer-led services include social groups, weekly befriending visits and lifts to social engagements. Just an hour a week of volunteering makes a huge difference to the life of an older person, helping them to stay socially active and combatting loneliness. Our volunteers enjoy getting to know older people and learning from their life experiences!

The need for these services is only increasing, as the population ages and the link between loneliness and poor health is better understood. Indeed, research suggests that loneliness can be as harmful for our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

May, 98, who has been using the charity’s services for 13 years, says, “Before I joined Link Age Southwark I was lonely and bored. I’m so grateful to the charity’s volunteers for bringing joy to my life.”

Richard, 53, who visits two older gentlemen weekly, says, “They both appreciate my company and the chance to talk to somebody. They look forward to my visits, and I look forward to them too. I’ve made two new friends.”
